The woman in the hotel bathroom kept adjusting the shower temperature, her fingers tapping the chrome knob with quiet impatience. Too hot, then too cold—she couldn’t get it right. Steam curled around her bare shoulders as she glanced at the fogging mirror, catching glimpses of herself: the sharp angle of her collarbone, the damp strands of hair sticking to her neck. She exhaled, slow and deliberate, and turned the water off entirely.

Outside, the room was dim—just the way he liked it—lamps dialed low, curtains drawn against the city’s glow. She walked out without bothering with a towel, water still slick on her skin. The carpet fibers prickled under her feet as she crossed to the bed, where her dress lay in a crumpled heap. She nudged it aside with her toe.

The air conditioning hummed faintly, cooling the droplets trailing down her thighs. She paused halfway to the bed, tilting her head—listening. The shower had masked it before, but now she could hear the sharp click of a lighter, the slow drag of breath. He was here, somewhere in the room’s shadows, watching. She let her arms hang loose at her sides, fingers slightly spread, as if offering herself up for inspection.
