The woman at the bar wasn’t drinking. That was the first thing anyone noticed about her, if they noticed her at all. She sat perfectly still on the stool, back straight, one elbow resting lightly on the counter while her fingers traced slow circles around the base of a glass of untouched gin. The ice had long since melted.

She wore purple—not lavender or lilac, but a deep, rich violet that clung to her hips and dipped low between her shoulder blades. The fabric shimmered under the dim bar lights like something alive, shifting with every slight movement of her body. It was the kind of dress that made people look twice, then immediately pretend they hadn’t.

The bartender wiped down the same patch of counter for the third time, glancing at her untouched drink. "You waiting for someone?" he asked, tossing the rag over his shoulder. His tone suggested he already knew the answer.

She didn’t look up. Her finger paused mid-circle on the glass. "Aren’t we all?" The words came out smooth, practiced—like she’d said them before, or knew she’d say them again.
